Common Names
Bladderwrack
Latin Name
Fucus vesiculosus
Habitat
Bladderwrack is a type of algae, which is natural seaweed. It grows in the rocky bottoms of offshore beds in ocean water. However, certified organic bladderwrack is very difficult to find in the world.
Traditional Uses
Seaweed has historically been ingested as a dietary source of iodine and used in the treatment of goiter and other thyroid disorders.
Medicinal Uses
Both Bladderwrack and Laminaria, another form of kelp, are high in Iodine. Iodine in the plants maintains a healthy thyroid thereby significantly reducing one of the major causes of obesity. Fucoidans from some brown algae, including bladderwrack (F. vesiculosus), exhibit antioxidant activity in vitro.
